Relationship OCD (ROCD)

Relationship OCD (ROCD) is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder that centers on intimate relationships. Individuals with ROCD experience intrusive, distressing thoughts and doubts about their relationship, partner, or both, which can severely impact their emotional well-being and the quality of their relationships.

People with ROCD are constantly questioning their feelings towards their partner, plagued by the fear that they might be in the wrong relationship. These doubts and anxieties are relentless, making it nearly impossible to maintain a healthy relationship. They feel overwhelmed by doubt, anxiety, and uncertainty, constantly questioning the strength of their feelings, their compatibility, or their partner's love and commitment. This persistent unease and dissatisfaction occur even without concrete reasons, trapping them in a loop of overthinking and second-guessing, unable to trust their own emotions and judgments.

Common ROCD Obsessions:

  • Doubting love or attraction: Repeatedly questioning whether they truly love their partner or feel attracted to them.
  • Compatibility concerns: Obsessing over perceived incompatibilities, such as differences in values, interests, or future goals.
  • Fear of settling: Worrying that they might be "settling" for the wrong partner and missing out on a perfect match.
  • Partner's flaws: Fixating on minor flaws or imperfections in their partner and viewing them as deal-breakers.

Common ROCD Compulsions:

  • Reassurance-seeking: Frequently asking their partner or friends for validation about their feelings or compatibility.
  • Comparison: Constantly comparing their relationship to others to gauge whether theirs measures up.
  • Checking behaviors: Repeatedly reviewing memories or feelings to ensure they match the ideal of love.
  • Avoidance: Avoiding situations or topics that might trigger doubts or obsessions about the relationship.
